    Alex,
It appears that we have certain uncanny similarities in our cover letters. Both regard the same problem: believing that we were "done" reading or writing. I suppose that we are both a tad conceited (but who isn't?). At any rate, at least we learned the same lesson. As you put it, "progress can always be made."

I enjoyed reading your college essay, and believe it to be your best piece. The characterization achieved within five hundred words was not only impressive, but entertaining, especially to anyone who actually understands the references to those classic 80's movies. I was thoroughly enthralled in the imitative piece, and it's a shame that it had to be cut short. I agree with Arthur that, "One hell of a second coming," is "One hell of a" quote.

As to your academic work, it started off good but certainly showed a lot of growth. I was impressed that in one week after the Kite Runner essay, the quality of your next essay improved as much as it did. At that rate, the essays certainly appear to be going places. Keep up the good work!

I think it's interesting, your reasoning behind taking this class. You said that you wanted to learn how to write a proper analytical essay, with a real introduction and conclusion paragraph. That's something that I suppose I needed, too. After essay writing with Caulfield last year we all thought that conclusions were unnecessary distractions and a waste of time. To a point I still think it's true, but you're right in that they do help tie up loose ends. The "unexpected factor" of the class that you point out is interesting too. I didn't expect either to have to do public speaking in front of everyone. I guess that's just part of the ride.

On your college essay, your comment "There is an authentic and raw quality in the piece that is genuinely honest and enjoyable to read" makes a lot of sense to me. For these essays our goal was to expose ourselves to the admissions people in as few words as possible. I really like how you wrote this one. There's so much of your own voice in it. Good job.

Your first essay is just like mine. Your comments on it are almost identical to mine too, but better worded: "this essay’s cracks show in even the faintest light."

Your short story is amazing. Please publish it somewhere. "They were lepers, and here was Jesus with a flamethrower. One hell of a second coming."

You really did show a lot of growth and change as a writer over the course of this year. From your first essay full of holes to your last essay solid as rock anyone can see the amazing change that you've undergone this whole year. Good job, Alex!
